Adding the Queen's Memorial public holiday - September 2022

This month, Australia and New Zealand are having an extra, one-off public holiday to mark the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. These are taking place on September 22 in Australia and September 26 in New Zealand.

To record the holiday in Advanced Workforce Management, you'll need to add it in leave settings. You may also need to account for any other payroll activities affected by the new holiday such as new starters, terminations, and existing leave requests.

Setting up the Queen's Memorial holiday

South Canterbury Anniversary Day South Canterbury in New Zealand already has a public holiday scheduled for 26 September, which should be set up for the affected employees. We'll update this page with information about how to deal with this clash as it becomes available.

  1. Go to Management > Settings > Holidays
  2. Click the + icon to add a new holiday.
  3. Enter the relevant details:

    • Name:Queen's Memorial
    • Date: 22/09/2022 (AU) or 26/09/2022 (NZ)
    • Alternate Date: n/a
Also add your Country and, if needed, any specific Locations that the holiday applies to.
  4. Click Save to finish creating the new holiday.

Checking other affected payroll activities

New starters and terminations

Check that you have made the appropriate arrangements to update staff who were previously scheduled to start or finish their employment on the date of the public holidays.

Pre-existing leave requests

Employee entitlements

Employees with leave already planned on the new holiday are entitled to the new holiday depending on the type of leave, and whether it was paid or unpaid:

  • In both Australia and New Zealand, annual and sick leave must only be replaced if it's “paid” and the day would have been a regular/normal work day for the employee.
  • For Australian long service leave, the rules are determined by state or territory legislation.
  • Unpaid leave cannot be replaced by a paid public holiday

For more information about which employees are entitled to the public holiday, see the available government guidance:

Managing pre-existing leave requests

If you do have any leave requests that need to be changed, see How do I edit an existing leave/unavailability request?
