Unable to open Payroll, or errors "1976" or "114"


Errors like Error: "1976/Cannot resolve backlink" or Error: "114/Index does not match the table" can occur if Payroll doesn't close correctly. This can happen if there's a power outage or system crash, and it can corrupt your Payroll file.

To fix this error you'll need to restore your most recent backup.


To fix this error
  1. Start MYOB Payroll.
  2. If you can't start Payroll or you don't see the Welcome window, complete the task below (Removing the corrupt data) then resume these steps.
  3. On the Welcome window, click Create a new payroll.
  4. For the Company Name, enter ABC.
  5. Ignore the Serial Number, Tax Year End and Current Month fields.
  6. Make a note of what's shown in the Folder field.
  7. Click OK.
  8. In the Payroll Options window, leave all fields blank and click OK.

  9. In the Payroll data file activation window, click Cancel.

  10. Click OK to the message about 90 days left to activate your payroll file.

  11. On the Payroll command centre, go to the File menu and choose Restore.

  12. Click the ellipsis () button.

  13. Locate your latest payroll back up data and restore.

  14. Once restored, go to the File menu and choose Open.

  15. You will see 2 copies of your company with different folder names. The one with the folder you noted down in step 6 is the current file. Select the other file and chose Delete.

If you can't start Payroll or don't see Payroll's Welcome window, complete these steps.


Removing the corrupt data
  1. Simultaneously press the Windows and E keys on your keyboard (the Windows key is between the Ctrl and Alt keys). The File Explorer window appears.
  2. Browse to the location where you store your payroll data, this will be either: C:\Program Files\MYOB\Payroll\Data or C:\Users\Public\Data\MYOB\Payroll
    If you run more than one payroll, you will have a folder for each one. These are typically named Payroll 1, Payroll 2, etc.
  3. Remove the payroll that was open when the crash occurred:
    1. Right-click the applicable Payroll folder, for example Payroll 1, and choose Cut.
    2. Right-click your Desktop and choose Paste.
  4. If your payroll data is held in the Program Files folder, double-click the Data folder located in the location highlighted above. Alternatively, if your payroll data is held in the Users folder, double-click the Payroll folder located in the location highlighted above.
  5. Within this folder you will see three files named CADATA with various extensions. Right-click and choose Delete for each of these three files.
  6. Also within this folder you will see three files named PAYROLLS with various extensions. If you're using MYOB Accountants Office, leave the file PAYROLLS.DBF but right-click the other 2 and choose Cut, then right-click the Desktop and choose Paste. If you're not using MYOB Accountants Office, you can remove all 3 PAYROLLS files by cutting and pasting to the Desktop.
  7. Close File Explorer.
  8. Complete the task above (To fix this error).


What about the items I pasted to my Desktop?

Restoring the backup (as described in To fix this error) recreates these files, so if your issue is fixed, you can safely delete the files you pasted to your desktop.
