MYOB PayGlobal Online Database Upgrade Information

We’re improving our services for you

We're upgrading our MYOB PayGlobal Online database servers to SQL Server Failover Cluster Instances (FCIs). This change improves the resilience and availability of our MYOB PayGlobal Online infrastructure.

Migrating to FCI’s allows us to deliver the benefits of a scalable platform and provide better recovery processes. This is our next step as we continuously improve our service offering for our clients.

Why change?

Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) is a feature of the Windows Server platform for improving the high availability of applications and services. Moving to FCI’s is important as it improves our automated recovery processes and provides an added layer of confidence as it is designed to automatically repair itself in the event of server failure. Moving to FCI will have no impact to how you use MYOB PayGlobal

Is this new?

WSFC has been in use across the world for at least 10 years now, in its current form; we don’t expect any issues.

When will this happen?

We’ll be migrating customers steadily over 2022, starting in April. We will be in touch with you two weeks before migration to remind you of this change.

Are there any changes that will affect me?

There is one change that may affect you:

SQL Server Upgrade to 2019

When we migrate your database to our FCI servers, we will be upgrading the version of Microsoft SQL Server from 2014 to 2019.

How will this affect me?

If you regularly obtain a backup of your database from us for data warehousing purposes or disaster recovery, you will need to ensure that the SQL Server instance you restore these backups to is version 2019 or higher.

Do you know what SQL Server version you have?

If your SQL server instance is on a version lower than 2019, you will not be able to restore the backup as they are not backwards compatible.

What if we don’t get backups from you?

Then you don’t need to worry. You will not notice any changes.

Other Security & Architecture-related information

It’s important to note that this change affects PayGlobal database infrastructure only; the new FCI infrastructure will integrate seamlessly with the rest of our existing online infrastructure. There are no added charges associated with the new infrastructure.

Are there any changes to encryption?

Data is automatically encrypted at rest and in transit. Encryption of data at-rest uses keys managed with AWS Key Management Service, and AWS automatically encrypts data-in-transit using SMB Kerberos session keys

What about performance?

The FCI technology is much simpler to scale and will be implemented with improved monitoring & alerting functionality that will allow us to identify and tune performance issues before our customers notice them. As a result, we expect the performance to be better than the existing database infrastructure.

Disaster Recovery

This change will improve our recovery processes. We have updated our Disaster Recovery documentation to reflect the infrastructure change.

Will there be an outage during migration?

Yes, there will be a short outage while we complete the migration activities and testing. This will be done on the weekend during maintenance windows to avoid any impacts.
